Both of my girls have long loved American Girl. The both have a few of the dolls and they love playing with them. In fact, my older daugher has been in the American Girl Fashion Show a couple of times and we even took a trip to New York City with her doll for her 5th birthday just to visit American Girl. My girls take their American Girl obsession seriously!
For the first time in American Girl’s 25-year history, the company is introducing two different historical characters, Cécile Rey™ and Marie-Grace Gardner™, in one six-book series set in 1850s New Orleans. The new characters—one African American and one Caucasian—show the power of friendship and community as they reach across the boundaries of race and class to help their families, friends, and city during a time of great need. To celebrate Cécile and Marie-Grace’s debut and the rich musical tradition of New Orleans, American Girl has partnered with 13-year-old Kate Connick and her father, world-renowned musician and actor Harry Connick, Jr., to create an original song—“A Lot Like Me”—with all proceeds benefiting the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans.
Despite different backgrounds and life stories, Cécile (a bold, confident girl from a well-to-do African American family), and shy, caring Marie-Grace (who has just moved back to New Orleans with her father), form a unique bond through their shared love of music. Later, their growing friendship deepens as they work together to help their community during the yellow fever epidemic that sweeps through New Orleans in 1853. Each character is brought to life through a beautifully designed 18-inch doll, plus an array of historically accurate and culturally authentic clothes and accessories that reflect the girls’ heritage and time period.
The Cécile and Marie-Grace dolls, books, and accessories became available in all American Girl outlets on August 30, 2011.

I love the American Girl Doll series I have for many years… as for who I want these for, it is that time of year for me to be collecting for Toys for Tots this Christmas. I would like to share these dolls because AG is not only beautiful but also has a positive message and a nice story. I adore these two as they show that friendship can help change things.

i would LOVE to share these dolls with my daughter. She has been asking for an American Girl doll since last Christmas, and was sad that she didn’t get one, but she hasn’t given up hope that she’ll get one this year. It would make her YEAR if she got 2 American Girl dolls! I also want to share the dolls story with her as there is a lesson to be learned..

My daughter, Zoe, is a special little girl. She has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and has been confined to a wheelchair since she was 14 months old. Zoe is a very smart and loving human being who is always too concerned with the welfare of others to feel sorry for herself or complain about her challenges. Since the age of about 4, Zoe has been obsessed with music. Her iPod Nano is so full that in order to put new music on it, we have to take music off. She goes to pop concerts regularly and just performed in her district chorus. For Zoe, music is the one place where she doesn’t encounter the barriers of every day life. At 10 years old she has found her passion – something most of us search for well into adulthood.
We love American Girl in our home. Not only do the stories open up discussions about American history, there is always a valuable lesson to be learned. These two particular American Girl dolls have a story that revolves around the love of music. Despite their differences, the girls form a friendship based on a common bond that my daughter also shares with them. Zoe hasn’t found another child who loves music as much as she does, but she does have a close friend. It takes a very special child to befriend Zoe at recess when all the other kids are running around. I am always touched very deeply when I see a child decide to stay back with Zoe as everyone plays basketball or swings. Zoe is very lucky to have one such little girl in her life but unfortunately she is about to move schools, I would love to be able to share these two dolls with the two of them so they each could keep a part of the other with them.
I would love to share these with my little sister. She is handicapped and loves dolls and collect them. She love the American girl dolls the best
