A few weeks ago, I was sent the Lysol No Touch Kitchen System to use in our household.

Now I love automated things and soap is one of those things that always end up with a yucky looking container because of my kids. That doesn’t happen any more.

Being kind to the Earth. That is something my two children are very concerned about. In fact, at the ages of 8 and 7, they know all about recycling. They know about the importance of planting plants and nurturing the Earth.

Both of these kids know and understand the importance of taking care of the Earth. They want to make the world we live in a better place. And these kids genuinely believe that they can do it.

There is this amazing opportunity from  the Kalso Earth Shoe company, makers of the original wellness shoe and the Earth Footwear that I wear and love. They are awarding three $1000 scholarships to people in deserving communities.

One of the things that I truly love about Scouting is the emphasis on trying to live a greener life. The emphasis on reducing our carbon footprint. This is my first year as a Scout leader and I have to say that I have learned a lot.

We made natural air fresheners at one meeting. We learned about recycling and reusing. We even talked about re-purposing. One child shared how her family puts a bucket under the faucet in their bathtub so they don’t waste a drop of water when they turn it on. I am amazed at some of the great ideas these kids came  up with and practice in their everyday lives.

MY PROPOSAL

I want to make the school look better and become more environmentally friendly with more plants/flowers.

The Scouts at the school my children attend (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts) will perform an Earth Day service project. The Scouts are in grades 1-5 and are ready to make their school a better place.

We will beautify our school by planting trees and flowers. We will start by cleaning up the grounds and getting rid of debris/dead plants or vegetation. A few splashes of color with plants and flowers would make the school look amazing! We will add mulch all over the grounds (many places really need it) and even add some rain barrels to collect water to hydrate all of the beautiful plants we will be adding.

We would also love to add some live plants on the inside of the school lobby as well to brighten it up and with any leftover money, possibly get a live plant into every classroom.

I will take pictures and video the Scouts as they complete the School Beautification Project. I will take lots of before and after pictures.  All scouts will also earn a badge for their Earth Day work.

Oral care is something that has long been a concern of mine. I know that healthy teeth and gums are incredibly important. I didn’t become concerned until I was in my early 20′s. I mean I brushed my teeth my entire life and sometimes flossed but there was something about having braces as an adult that made me turn into an oral care fanatic.

I brushed twice a day. I flossed daily. I used mouthwash and a tongue scraper daily too. I saw a dentist every six months for regular cleanings. I have healthy teeth and gums.

I want my kids to have these same habits but I have often found that with kids, practicing good oral care is a constant struggle.

Did you know?

With the kids, we set good oral care examples and they generally follow suit. We brush at least twice a day. We floss. We use mouthwash.

My kids see the dentist regularly. They have told us every time that my kids teeth are in excellent condition. No cavities and they appear to be regularly brushed.

But my kids have a lot to do with that too. They don’t drink a lot of soda. They drink a ton of water. Every single day. They also love milk and dairy. Like I said, they do tons of things right. I am proud of them.

Here are some tips below from pediatric dentist, Dr. Kaneta Lott, DDS:

Make oral care fun (e.g., make it a game; brush, floss and rinse to music; etc).
Reward their behavior (e.g., give gold stars for good oral care).
Show, don’t tell – make oral care a family affair.
Involve them in their own oral care routine by providing products like LISTERINE® Smart Rinse, which can make the daily routine more fun, provides 12-hour cavity protection for kids and strengthens teeth 99 percent better than brushing alone.

In order to keep my kids brushing, we follow many of the tips above. We make brushing fun. They pick out their own toothbrushes and their own toothpaste. If they want mouthwash, I buy that for them too. They love to get flossers as well. Whatever they want when it comes to oral care, we do it! We are that committed!

In March 2009, I started blogging for myself. I had been a writer most of my life. I had been blogging for years for others. Attending the Blissdom conference gave me that last little push I needed to get my blog going.

One of the first places I found when looking for community, was SITS. They used to call themselves The Secret is in the Sauce and I just found that so funny. And true!

I jumped right in. I loved that I would leave a link to my blog and tons of people would visit. In turn, I would do the same thing and I found some amazing blogs along the way. Many of them I still subscribe to today.

Today the name is The Secret to Success is Support and that is so true.

The sense of community was addicting. I loved that I felt like I was a part of something bigger. I was in the company of people who got the online world because let’s face it, a lot people don’t, do they?
